She sat on her changing table repeating’ Baaaa.. Baaaa.. Baaa…’ as her Mama changed her clothes. As I stood in the doorway of her room, I could tell she was unsure of me. She was looking to her Mama as if to try and figure out who I was. Was I a babysitter? Was I a friend? Who was this lady talking to her Mama and smiling at her. After a quick outfit change, this little love got her hands on her requested item, her toothbrush! Smart little girl if you ask me, after all, when you open your mouth, you do say ‘Ah!’ Like a combination of ‘brush’ and ‘ah’… “Baaa..”
With her little personality shining through, it didn’t take long to click my shutter and with that it was as if she turned the switch on! She knows exactly what to do in front of a camera – Hammin’ it up! It wasn’t long before I had a new best friend who was eager to show me all her toys and tricks. I am so happy her Mama called to schedule her 1 year portraits at her home, in this space. These types of sessions are my absolute favorite. The messy hair, the drooling face, the giggles you can still hear when you look at her in these pictures. The little trouble maker glance, the belly laugh, the coy smiles that capture her essence. These are the things to remember. The way she carries around her toothbrush, or loves her stuffed animals so much she squishes them with hugs, and especially the way she plays baby. These memories, these every day moments, they can become lost in the shuffle. But not for this family! Portraits can be formal but they can also be very real. That is one of the greatest blessings you can give your family. I know my own kids love looking at their photos from when they were babies — Imagine if you didn’t have anything but their milestone portrait on the walls? This is your life. Document it.
